BUDDY HOLLY - Liverpool's Philarmonic Hall 20/03/1958

BUDDY HOLLY - Liverpool's Philarmonic Hall 20/03/1958

Posté le 28.06.2008 par rockinandrollin
Mr Jim Newcombe author-composer and Rock 'n' Roll fan saw Buddy Holly and The Crickets on stage at the Liverpool's Philarmonic Hall on March 20, 1958, here is an excerpt from Let It Rock (England 1973)
**********
Whereas in America Holly was just one of many acts featured on package shows, in Britain he was a superstar. Between September 1957 and August 1958 he had 6 hits in a row and at one time he and The Crickets had 4 singles in the top 20 simultaneously.
When they toured here in March 1958, Holly frail diffident demeanour contrasted sharply with his confident, raunchy stage show. Basically, their sound on stage amounted to Holly's fully cranked up guitar and Jerry Allison's angry yound drumming (says Petty, «he used to use extra large sticks, they reminded me of baby baseball bats»). According to Allison, bassist Joe Mauldin «not to put him down, didn't play that much bass» (Mrs Petty had to teach him the rudiments) and used his upright bass rather more as a stage prop. «He'd do a good rock show, lay on his back and do all that stuff».
Electric guitars in the late 50's were modestly amplified. Artists generally used tiny 30-50 watts speaker/amp units- in the Crickets case, just one for Holly's Stratocaster. But from all reports they were pretty loud. Rock fan Jim NEWCOMBE saw The Crickets at Liverpool's Philamornic Hall. He writes : «Accompanied by Joe Mauldin on string bass and Jerry Allison on drums, the grey suited Buddy walked on to a tremendous reception. His first song, «Everyday», was the slowest in his act and even this was quite a lot faster than the record. After his opening number he left his disc image way behind. The tall gangling youth in spectacles featured Rock 'N' Roll of the highest class. «Rip it up», «Readdy Teddy», «Be-bop-a-lula» and «Great balls of fire» all came over loud and clear. How the three of them made so much noise I'll never know. They threw in their hits, «Oh boy», «That'll be the day», «Peggy Sue» and «Maybe baby» for good mesure but even these were rocked up considerably. Before each of the rock songs I have mentioned, Buddy gave a word or two about the original discs.
As he sang and played his Fender guitar, Buddy hopped around the stage rather like a younger and more enthusiastic Chuck Berry. He dropped on one knee, holding his guitar high then danced across to Jerry or Joe in a frenzy of music and motion. Occasionally he punctuated his fiery vocals with whoops of encouragement to The Crickets who responded in no mean way. Jerry really rattled the skins while Joe rode his bass like the Lone Ranger. Perhaps a touch of The Comets about this. At one stage the proceedings got so hot, Buddy called a halt. People were dancing in the aisles and yelling out for numbers such as the chart songs « Oh boy ». "If you don't quiet down, ah won't sing at all" was Buddy's answer, and they cooled off. He had that personal magnetism that gets an audience».
